Destination Dubai 2017 | A hands-on workshop and Food Experience

Dubai Photography Experience Banner-1 Dubai feels like a second home to me. My parents have lived there since the mid nineties and I have been part of Dubai’s incredible progress since the eighties when we lived in Qatar and often visited the city.

Dubai is a city of surprises and over the decade it has risen, then fallen and like a phoenix the city had begun to soar high again. While Dubai boasts of audacious architecture, dramatic skylines, dazzling fashion and style and a thriving contemporary art scene, hidden behind the glitz, Dubai surprises with a rich culture.  Rooted in Bedouin heritage and traditions of storytelling, poetry, song, dance, and falconry, visitors will find pure pleasure in experiencing Dubai from its humble side.

These humble origins is what truly entices me! Walking the narrow alleys of Bur Dubai, getting lost in stories of the past, haggling for spices, sipping on spiced Arabic coffee,  discovering the secrets of the windtowers - are all parts of Dubai that inspire me and gets my creative engine running. It is this aspect of Dubai I am keen on sharing with my participants.

I have worked hard with my collaborators and partners this year to literally re-structure the entire workshop allowing me to accommodate some of the new plans and visions I was keen to realize for some time now. Without the support and motivation from the on-location team this would not have been possible. The lovely Roya Tarzaban has been a monumental pillar helping me accomplish all the aspects of putting this workshop together. As a freelance chef and recipe developer with a background in design; she loves working with various food brands to develop delicious and visually appealing dishes. A graduate in classical French cuisine from Dubai's School of Culinary and Finishing Arts, she's also trained in health-supportive cooking with a focus on dairy-free and gluten-free dishes for those with food intolerances and sensitivities. As my Dubai workshop 2015 alumna, she has had the valuable insight on restructuring the workshop to focus on the needs of the participants and her gregarious nature always took the edge of a stressful situation.

My other valued pillar has been, as in the past few years, Alisha Haque and the very supportive team at SCAFA. Dubai’s best School of Culinary And Finishing Arts at the Jumeirah Lake Towers has not only been the venue for the workshops in the past years but also the entire team has been there to advise and guide me through many of the steps needed to put a workshop together. Their faith and backing for these events is simply priceless.

I am incredibly delighted to share with you a fantastic and inspiring 2-day food & lifestyle photography experience this October in spectacular Dubai. Together we will not only work on many concepts and techniques of food photography and take creative approaches to food styling but we will also discover the old hidden treasures of Old Dubai.

We will walk through the old historic neighborhood and explore one of the oldest areas of Dubai where the Sheiks once ruled. We will sip Arabic coffee and travel back into time on an adventurous journey through Dubai’s  rich cultures and heritage. We will taste a variety of traditional Arabic Mezze in a convivial meal sharing typical dishes from the Arabic cuisine. We will stroll through vibrant streets of Bur Dubai and the so-called “Hindu Lane” where the colorful alleyway is filled with baskets of fruit, garlands of flowers, sandalwood paste and other paraphernalia. We will ride the abra across the iconic creek to the spice souk where there will be plenty of time to experience the incredible array of aromatic spices, take photographs and do a little shopping!

The focus for this food and lifestyle experience is to:

It includes photography and styling sessions with me, lots of individual and some team practical hands-on exercises, as well as an excursion to the old historic neighborhood Bastakiya and the vibrant Bur Dubai, a ride on the abra to visit the old spice souk to get a feel of Arabian daily life stretching back for centuries. The entire tour is intricately planned to allow for plenty of photograph opportunities, relax and time to souvenir shop.
