Long, lazy mornings is what we are enjoying at the moment. No hectic, no meetings, no stress to get anywhere and the feeling is good. Christmas weekend came and went and the tumultuous celebrations of the three days with gift wrapping, roast cooking and tree decorating lie behind us. We’re letting our souls dangle in the sheer luxury of time wasting and the opulence of big and extravagant breakfasts.

As early as August is when the stores and supermarkets here begin stocking up on Christmas-ware and food treats. It’s crazy in September as I see scary chocolate ghosts and pumpkins lined along the shelves with smiling Santas and cute snowmen. I often wonder if people really indulge in Christstollen, lebkuchen and co. when the heat is on in the sweltering months.

You’ve arrived with a storm, taking us all in your wintery grasp and covering us in a deep fluffy white blanket. Each year you force yourself earlier upon us. Arriving like a silent ghost, you bring a shuddery chill throughout the region. The bare snow-topped trees sparkle as if lined with diamonds and morning rays of sunlight dance through the mist of a bleak and gray sky.
