Thankful | for a Walk in the Park
Come take a seat next to me my friend. Rest. Breathe. Contemplate.
The path seems to be a long hard one as challenging times lie ahead. Let us realign and unite for together we are stronger, we can make the difference. Let us take a moment to ignite the fire of love and respect, to find our inner strength, to be bold ... for these are not normal times.
Incredible India: Colors, Light and People
India has a strong influence on the senses of those visiting the country – it is loud, it is colorful and it is very multifaceted, a country with incredible paradoxes. Under all the contrasts this vast country presents, there is something consistent that one could easily describe it as the essence of India.
Travel Ticker: The Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi
Dubai boasts of infinite superlatives – the list is long and they have taken a lead, setting many trends in various fields. However, another Emirate boasts of one of the most stunning landmarks in the region with a list of its own superlatives to boot. Abu Dhabi’s iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, took 12 years to realize and was designed to be an architectural wonder which incorporates both modern and classic Islamic artistic styles.
Workshop: Helsinki 2014 - The Heat is On!
No two workshops are ever the same. Each one seems to come with its own set of rules, dynamics and chaos. Each one has different challenges and other highlights. When one thing works for one workshop by no means does it mean it will work for the next one. One sells out within days the other takes weeks. I have not yet figured out all the math or the algorithm of how this works and I probably never will. But one thing is for sure planning the workshop keeps me and my partners always on our toes.
Venice Workshop: Inspiration on the Strada del Prosecco
There is a time and place for everything and those are the times when everything falls into place just perfectly. It did not take very long after our collaboration in the London workshop last year for Jeanne and me to get back in the saddle to plan the next one together. We are a well functioning team and we had a very clear idea of how and where the next workshop would be.
With the gracious team of Nino Franco supporting us things glided off to a smooth start.
Travel: Salute Venezia! Discovering Enchanting Venice
“It’s Venice dear the whole city is a museum.” – my friend Dacotah R.
As we packed our bags for the summer, last year, to head off on the road trip that took us to 3 destinations, I had no idea how true these words, by the lovely, Dacotah, were going to be.
Venice has been on my bucket list forever and the fact that we were finally managing this trip was more than exciting. We had just a few days in the city and I wanted to make the most of it.
Spice it up: London Food Photography and Styling Workshop
London is a tough and competitive market. When it comes to food blogging there are a multitude of blogs broadcasting from this inspiring and pulsating city that it’s hard to keep count. However, even though there are many bloggers and foodies in London I never looked into the city as a place to host one of my workshops. It’s an expensive city and costs like venue, travel and other expenses that need to be considered while calculating the overall ticket price can quickly become costly making it seem ridiculously high-priced.
Impressions of the London Food Styling and Photography Workshop
I am back from London! Phew! What can I say - London energizes, enlivens and exhausts me. It’s a city so full of wonderful impressions and creativity that one needs to free the mind to empower it with all the impacts it is fed with.
The weekend was sensational and so full of creative intensity I have come away feeling like I am walking on clouds. Do you know that feeling?
Dubai: A State of the Art Food Photography & Styling Workshop at Miele
“Militante!” shouted Giorgio punching the air with his fist and grinning at us as he turned around and walked back into the cool air-conditioned Ronda Locatelli leaving us feeling exhilarated, ready to take on the world. Giorgio Locatelli is a man of great passion and it is easy to become infected by his passion as he shares his love of good Italian food with many stories of his childhood.
The surprise Sally and I had arranged for the participants of the Dubai Food Styling and Photography workshop was a full on success. Meeting Giorgio Locatelli was a well deserved treat that happened later on the first day after a packed few hours of photography and styling techniques and theory. Sally and I had organized our second food styling and photography workshop in Dubai, this time at the gorgeous venue of Miele’s lovely gallery.
Travel: A Midsummer in Stockholm
Stockholm has been one of those capitals I’ve always wanted to visit. I’m infatuated with the Nordic countries. Denmark’s capital charmed me, while the Norwegian capital Oslo stole my heart. So, when Tom started working on his project in Stockholm last year I was ecstatic, promptly buying books and magazines. I imagined flying up with Soeren to visit Tom on a regular basis and discovering Stockholm from a different side.
Plate to Page Somerset: The Best of Britain
Does it ever become a routine when one does something often enough?
In some cases it might, yes, becoming a chore, perhaps. There are some things, however that no matter how often you repeat them, they still preserve the initial charm of the first time. And From Plate to Page certainly falls in the latter category.
From Plate to Page: Under the Tuscan Sun
Getting a group of people under one roof for an entire weekend can be a tricky, if not an intricate matter. The dynamics need to be just right; the energy has to flow in all the positive directions and the synergy between the group must be cohesive and interactive. It’s difficult to get all the processes right in one group, usually a good amount of work is involved beforehand to bind each individual into forming a harmonious group.
We met in Weimar
Photo: Jenn of Jenn’s Cuisine
We’ll always have Weimar. It was surreal and I am still collecting and ordering my thoughts for the weekend gone. Plate to Page came and with a click of the camera button and a stroke of a pen it disappeared. The four of us - Ilva, Jeanne, Jamie and I, had had this vision for a long time and after almost a year in planning, organizing, fretting and frustrations, I think it would be safe to say the first Plate to Page Workshop in Weimar was an amazing event.
Vienna – A Weekend Getaway
The clocks seem to tick slower in Austria. It’s what the high-strung Germans will tell you with a agitated wave of the hand. Indeed, it does seem that time has slowed down, allowing you ample time to inhale the capacious sights this small country in Central Europe offers. The easy going and relaxed nature of the Austrians will make you kick off the hectic and take a step back. You’ll want to, because there is no other way to enjoy Austria. And this is particularly the case in Austria’s beautiful capital, Vienna.
1500 Sausages of Germany
There are many reasons why I love living in Germany. The beer is good, the incredible cakes are the most delicious I have ever tasted, there is a decadent variety of chocolate, cheese and yogurt available, being so wonderfully central it’s a stone’s throw away from France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Norway, Denmark, making the long vacations people have here (I have 30 days plus all the bank holidays) a real pleasure. But what I really, really love about living in Germany is the sheer abundance of the many different types of sausages one gets here.
Ending on a High Note: Bacon Cheese and Leek Tart and a Giveaway
You can’t choose family. You just get them and are stuck with them for the rest of your life. You either love them or you don’t. But blood is thicker than water and regardless of the cards you are dealt with you know you will support, protect and love them for a lifetime to come.
The Norwegian Kitchen, Smoking Salmon and a Potato Beet and Cherry Salad
Majestic landscapes and climatic contrasts not only offer a breathtaking experience for visitors to the country, but they are also the quintessence of the ingredients from which the culinary traditions of Norway are derived from. With a long and diverse coastline, Norway provides ample waters for wild and farm-raised fish, while the slow ripening process of fruit and vegetables during the mild but sun filled Nordic summer provides berries, pears, apples and other fruit and vegetables with a delicious and extraordinary flavor and aroma. Sheep, cows and livestock grazing on the rich, succulent pastures acquire a distinctive robust flavor.
The recipe I present here is not a traditional Norwegian recipe. It is however inspired by my travels through the country, by Norway’s magnificent landscape, by the flavorful produce available and by the wonderful Norwegian people I had the pleasure of meeting and making friends with.
I am delighted to be presenting this recipe over at Juls’ blog Juls’ Kitchen. Juls has a wonderful energy and I met her for the first time at the Food Blogger Connect 2010 this June. It’s hard not to be taken in by her great enthusiasm and contagious laugh. Shortly before the FBC she had contacted me and asked if I would be interested in doing a guest post – the topic was summer vacations and food. We were in the middle of planning our summer vacation to Norway (read part one and part two) and I was going to see my all time favorite Norwegian 80s band a-ha in July (again!) and as it seems to be turning into the Year of Norway for me I was fairly clear on what I would be guest posting about.
Come join me over at Juls’ place as I share the quintessence of the Norwegian kitchen, smoke some salmon at home and make a salad inspired by my incredible journey to Norway.
Hope you all have a great weekend. Relax and spend time with the family. Next week we’ll be getting back into some recipes for your sweet tooth. Make sure you come over and take a peek.
