CLICK: Juicy Red

Watermelon Red (02) by MeetaK

Fruit! It's been a lot on my mind lately. I love everything about juicy fruit. Sweet, succulent, colorful and so healthy. Besides indulging into the tempting fruit basket, I find they make perfect motives for the camera.

I was really glad to see the return of Click - a great photography workshop brought to life by the brilliant Jugalbandi pair. This session's challenge was RED in the culinary context.

I knew straight away what I wanted to submit - a picture I had taken a few months back and also features the month of December 2009 in my RAW Calendar 2009. The calendar is still available to buy at my Zazzle gallery. It's been doing really well and thanks to all those who contacted me telling me how much they are enjoying the calendar. It honors me!

This picture "Juicy Red" was inspired by a shot I saw on Flickr a little over a year ago. It has always been on my mind since then. It had that instant WOW! effect on me. So, last year when I decided to take a few shots for the calendar, I decided to include watermelon. Instantly I was reminded of the shot. Unfortunately I could not find it anywhere again - but I decided to create my own version.

So, what do you think? Does it have a WOW! effect on you?

Details

  • Camera: Nikon D70s
  • Lens: Nikkor 18-70mm
  • Tripod: Bilora 1211
  • Focal Length: 44 mm
  • Exposure Time: 1/125s
  • Aperture: f/4.5
  • Lighting: Natural light from right and one Lowel Ego light from the left back corner. A bounce was used directly in front to light up any dark patches.

WOW! or not - I had a great time shooting with the juicy fruit. I enjoyed learning a bit about lighting mix - natural and lights. There's still so much to learn and so much to improve on. CLICK will be one of the events that challenges me to do just that.

  9. what a beautiful shot, Meeta!! Definitely WOW, WOW, WOW! :)
I've never mixed lights before... out of curiosity, what do you do for the white balance? If it's not tungsten or daylight, but rather both, do you set it on awb?

  10. Once again thanks everyone!

Tony - As I save my pictures in the RAW file format my camera ignores all WB settings. When I have saved the shots on my notebook I convert the pictures I want to use into JPEG and then use Photoshop to apply any color temperature shift. I've only been using the RAW format since October 2008 so I am still learning a lot. However, if you shoot in JPEG format then I have a great tip for you: Point your camera at a white or gray card (angled so that it is reflecting the light from the room) as a neutral reference, filling the screen completely with it. Then press the White Balance button (or set it in the menu), the camera does its WB calculation.
From now on your pictures will have its color temperature shifted appropriately. It should improve your indoors pictures considerably.
